Summary: Biothermodynamics is the science that clarifies the general laws of thermodynamic processes occurring in living organisms as non-equilibrium thermodynamic systems. The study analyzes the application of the principles (laws) of thermodynamics to solving problems in theoretical ecology. Open non-equilibrium (irreversible) processes, which include real transformations in nature, are accompanied by residual changes in the environment; for non-equilibrium processes, the key parameters change over time. The main sections of the review are devoted to the application of the principles of thermodynamics to ecology (understanding the thermodynamic principles of ecosystem functioning, developing concepts for achieving the sustainability of ecosystems and the biosphere in general, developing ideas of "entropy," etc.).
