Summary: In urban environments, water bodies are subject to complex anthropogenic pollution. Municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills have a wide range of impacts on aquatic ecosystems, as they contain large quantities of organic and inorganic pollutants. However, the response of aquatic biocenoses to this impact is extremely poorly studied. This paper describes the specific and functional structure of zooplankton communities in the Shuvalovsky Сanal section, which is under the influence of a reclaimed MSW landfill. Sampling was conducted from June to September 2023 at two sections of the canal: upstream and downstream of the landfill. It was found that in the area downstream of the landfill the level of chlorophyll, total mineralization, and the concentrations of total iron and manganese were elevated, while the water transparency was reduced. Differences in the seasonal succession of zooplankton communities between the two sections of the canal are demonstrated. Under the influence of the landfill, the species richness and diversity of the zooplankton community decreased; cladocerans were suppressed, and the functional structure shifted towards predators, with a reduction in overall functional diversity. High values of the Cyclopoida to Calanoida biomass ratio index in the area downstream of the landfill during the season indicate severe eutrophication. The ongoing impact of the reclaimed landfill demonstrates the need for monitoring studies to assess the state of the watercourse ecosystem.
