Summary: The article evaluates the protective properties of lignins obtained from the culms of oat (Avena sativa) and roseroot (Rhodiola rosea) during chronic oral intake of uranium-238 in mice weighing 22-27 grams at the beginning of the experiment. The animals received solutions of uranyl nitrate with uranium concentrations of 2.03, 6.1, and 12.2 mg/L for 30 days. It was shown that uranium accumulation in the body of mice increased disproportionally to its concentration, which may indicate the existence of physiological barriers to the accumulation of radionuclide. After prophylactic administration of lignin solutions as antidotes to uranium bioaccumulation (12.2 mg/L), the mortality of mice decreased: in females – by 20 % (roseroot lignin) and 30 % (oat lignin); in males – by 10 % (both lignins). The protective effect (a 20-fold decrease in uranium content) was recorded in the body of females of the old age group (7–12 months), whereas in males of the same age and in younger (4-6 months) individuals of both sexes, the barrier properties of lignins were not manifested. The obtained results open up prospects for development of specialized antidotal food additives taking into account the age and sex characteristics of animals, and may also be useful for further in-depth study of the mechanisms of detoxification of organisms from radionuclides.
