Summary: The advantage of intrinsic deductive approach to the classification of animal trophic groups classification (according to the variation sign, underlying the classification – the nutrition object) over the descriptive inductive one (observed phenomena are grouped) is discussed.. This approach is strongly logical and has such advantages as unified terminology and prognostic capability. In deductive approach one should use the single concept “food object” taken as the basis. The trophic groups of Coleoptera are analyzed as an example. We propose to use the taxonomic, mereological and ecological features as basis for classification. There can be a single classification with unique basis at each level of classification or three different classifications with three different logical bases.
