Summary: The essay examines the importance and compliance of the activities of Russian nature reserves with the goals of the Convention on the Conservation of Biological Diversity, ratified by the Russian Federation. The contradiction between the development of tourism in nature reserves and the fulfillment of this task is noted. The impossibility of preserving natural complexes without scientific control of the state of ecosystems is emphasized, especially in conditions when science in nature reserves has lost its priority. In the realities of increasing negative changes in nature, it is necessary to return to the concepts of the classics of nature reserve management – Dokuchaev, Kozhevnikov, Reimers, Shtilmark and reassess the dominant trends in the development of protected areas since the 90s of the last century.
